Week 12 Picks: Carrying the Load

DETROIT +11 over Green Bay: What type of a person would I be if I picked any differently? I am certainly not advising you to lay down any money here. But, I think it's safe to say that all Americans outside of Wisconsin will be rooting for the Lions tomorrow.

Oakland +13.5 over DALLAS: Dallas hasn't had much time to regroup after their win that felt like a loss over Washington on Sunday, and Oakland is probably feeling pretty good about themselves after knocking off Cincinnati. Now, Oakland is much worse away from the black hole, but I just don't think the Cowboys are capable of blowing anybody out. I like Tony Romo to struggle against a stout secondary. The Cowboys win, but not by two touchdowns.

NY Giants -7 over DENVER: Denver is regressing to the mean as we speak. This is not a playoff team. They were playing over their heads for a long time. On the other hand, I think the Giants are back where they should be. I actually think, special teams aside, that they played a great game against San Diego up until the final minute, when they clearly felt as if they already had the outcome in hand. Eli Manning returned to his early season form on Sunday against Atlanta, and it wasn't just a matter of the Falcons secondary being woeful. For the most part, they had good positioning on the Giants receivers. Eli was fitting the ball into small windows where only his receivers could get it. Manningham, Nicks, Boss, and Steve Smith are growing more confident every week. I know this is a night game in Denver, and I might be letting my fandom get the best of me, but I really don't think so. The G-Men are back.

Indianapolis -3.5 over HOUSTON: Indy might lose a game this season, and my pick will be wrong that week. I won't pick against them.

CINCINNATI -14 over Cleveland: I don't expect the Bengals to take Sunday's loss lightly. They've done more than enough to earn our respect up until this point, but I think this team feels the pressure of doubters every week. As for the Browns, Brady Quinn is certainly looking like the future. But, he's more of a next year or the year after that future. Certainly not a this season future. They may not win another game this season, but hopefully his improvement can be something that they can hang their hats on in the offseason.

MINNESOTA -11 over Chicago: The Vikings very well could be the NFL's best team. There's really no way to definitively separate the teams at the top, but this team can just get you in every way possible. They are very scary.

Washington +9 over PHILADELPHIA: The Redskins have been tougher lately. They are really showing some resolve. I'm not sure if they are trying to play for Jim Zorn, or if they are simply just starting to gel. The performances of Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright over the past two weeks certainly don't reflect very well on Clinton Portis. But, it does mean that maybe he doesn't need to be the workhorse next season if Betts is able to recover from this knee injury. Splitting up the carries between the three next year could be a much more effective approach, as it would keep Portis more fresh. Even with Betts out and Portis in question, I like the Skins to keep it close. They won't win, though.

Miami -3 over BUFFALO: For the first time in my life, I can't get enough of watching the Miami Dolphins. Can we please get some more love for Ricky Williams? People can say what they want about his off the field actions, but we here at roomofzen have never held it against him. I know nothing about what it is like to be a major celebrity who has been diagnosed with clinical depression and social anxiety disorder. I would imagine it's difficult. I also believe that people are allowed to think that their job sucks. On the field, this guy is everything that you could ever want in a player. He is the ultimate workhorse. I don't think I've ever seen a guy more overworked than he was in Miami in his first go-round and he never seemed to wear down. Because the Dolphins run so much, people are worried that Ricky won't be able to take on the primary back responsibilities on his own. Well, he's done it before. And, he seems healthier and happier now than he ever was then. I think he'll be fine.

TENNESSEE -2 over Arizona: Are people really that surprised that Vince Young is playing well? I mean, I didn't think he was a sure thing to play well this season, but by no means had I written him off completely. People forget that he played in the pro bowl his rookie year. The ability has always been there. He just had to fix his head. If you want to see an example of a guy doing that, see above (Ricky Williams) or see the 36 year old quarterback who led the titans to the playoffs last season in Young's absence.

ST. LOUIS +3 over Seattle: Call me crazy. Kyle Boller is under center, and Steven Jackson will be limited with a sprained lower back. But I just have a feeling. That Seattle defense has not been great lately.

ATLANTA -12 over Tampa Bay: The Falcons impressed me on Sunday. Curtis Snelling is the real deal. I think Josh Freeman is too, but it's going to take a while.

NY JETS -3 over Carolina: I don't care about this game.

SAN FRANCISCO -3 Jacksonville: The Jags don't travel well, which is not something I'd expect from a team who never has any fans at its games. The last time they went West, Seattle hung 41 on them.

SAN DIEGO -13.5 over Kansas City: Whatever man. I guess San Diego doesn't suck at football the way they suck at life. The Chiefs aren't going to win three in a row.

BALTIMORE -2.5 over Pittsburgh: I didnt watch Pittsburgh on Sunday, so it was really weird to turn on ESPN and have them say "Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch is out for the season with a broken wrist" while they showed him taking snaps. They didn't mention anything about him being in because of roethlisberger's concussion. I felt like I was in a time warp. Was it 2003? 2005? What the hell was going on. I didn't even know Charlie Batch was still in the league.

New England +3 over NEW ORLEANS: The Patriots are really good. I feel extremely confident about this one.

Happy Thanksgiving:

The Podcast Returns: NFL Preview, Part 1

It's been over six months since our last podcast, and our rust certainly shows in this shaky return to action. Babcock and I called each other this afternoon to vent our mutual anger that Brett Favre was back in the news, and somehow this resulted in an impromptu podcast. We begin by bashing Brett Favre for about 20 minutes before we move on to discuss the impressive preseason debuts of the Giants and Patriots. We then break down the AFC and NFC East and make our Heisman Trophy pick. Finally, I try (unsuccessfully, although I did give him a huge hint) to stump Babcock in celebrity trivia. Here's your hint: "if you lie with dogs, you're bound to get fleas". Informative? Definitely not. But, I'd say it's certainly entertaining.

We will be back with part 2, and will bring the rest of the staff in to the fold.

(it might take a few seconds to load. If you haven't heard anything after 30 seconds, close and come back to the site and try again. This should do the trick. If that doesn't work, click below and it will feed you the episode straight from gcast).

Check out this single from the new Baroness album (set to drop in October). It's called Bullhead's Psalm/The Sweetest Curse, and it kicks a lot of ass. It's comforting to know that soon enough (November or December according to their website), I'll be back at the Middle East and they'll be fucking blowing my face off again.

UPDATE: These are actually the first two songs of the new album. Bullhead's Psalm is the intro and leads in to track 2, which is the Sweetest Curse.

Roomofzen Fantasy Football.

What more can we say about Jeff Feagles that hasn't already been said 1,000 times on this website? The man is a fucking institution, plan and simple. At this point, I'm just enjoying every chance I get to see him punt while simultaneously awaiting the biography that I assume will be released when his career comes to a close.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I don't even know why we're bothering with the regular season. Let's just put the Giants and Patriots in the Super Bowl right now. The Giants defensive line rotation is unstoppable. Casten had Clint Sintim right. The guy is an animal. He would have had about 6 sacks tonight if he wasn't getting held like a bastard. How the hell are teams going to contend with him after they've already been broken by Osi, Tuck, Kiwanuka (who has given up his number to Sintim), big Fred Robbins, Rocky Bernard, Barry Cofield, Chris Canty, and Jay Alford? They won't. They can't. It's impossible. It's an embarrassment of riches. Don't even get me started on tonight's hero Tommie Hill. And then, on top of that, after Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw spent the first quarter steamrolling the Panthers, Danny Ware comes in and looks like he could go for 1,000 yards this season. David Carr and Mario Manningham both look like they're back in college. Maybe it's just me, but it really seems like the Giants could lose their entire first string (except Antonio Pierce) to injury and still win the Super Bowl.

Anyways, the reason I'm writing this post is to encourage you to join the roomofzen fantasy football league. Now, please don't be discouraged if you joined the fantasy basketball league and thought it was lame. The truth is that we all take fantasy football extremely seriously, and this league will be very competitive. It will also be covered right here on the site. Every transaction, every trade, every matchup will be covered here as if it were happening in real life. Not only will this plan finally give you that recognition you deserve for all that hard work you put in during the summer months, but it will also ensure that all players stay dedicated to their team throughout the entire season so that they can save face.

It should be awesome. The winner will receive a free roomofzen shirt that they design. Their design will also be featured in the roomofzen store.

Here are your instructions to join:

1) Follow this link to Yahoo! Fantasy Football

2) We are League #609049

3) Our password is: neclamchowder

This should bring you to our league (Boner Salad Reunion Tour) page. There, you can create your team. First come, first served. Draft will take place Tuesday, September 8th.

Speaking of the roomofzen store, we have a new item that is arriving just in time for fantasy football season:

purchase it here.

Embrace The Weekend: Be Afraid, NBA.

KG had successful knee surgery this week, which means that Cleveland and Orlando had better enjoy this moment they have right now, because they will not get off so easy next year. To those who say that KG is all done, and really to all those people that have been trying to knock him down over the past two months, I'd like to submit this 90 second video clip to express how I feel about you and your beliefs:

I've wrote several times on this site about what a great album Live Through This is. You can say that Hole sucked, and I can't argue with you. But that one album, Live Through This, was the epitome of catching lightning in a bottle (which is why I suspect Kurt Cobain played a heavy hand in it). Anyways, enjoy the weekend everyone:

God Bless America: The Lingerie Football League

Here is the official website of the Lingerie Football League, which will kickoff it's inaugural season on September 4th of this year. According to wikipedia:

"The concept originated from the hugely successful Super Bowl halftime alternative television special called the Lingerie Bowl which draws millions of viewers as a pay-per-view event broadcast annually directly opposite the Super Bowl halftime show. The television mega-special has become a staple of Super Bowl Sunday festivities for millions worldwide being broadcast in over 85 countries."

"Play style is full-contact and consists of seven women on each side of the 50-yard field, akin to indoor football. Uniforms consist of helmets, shoulder pads, bikini tops and shorts."

Now, you might think that I'm sitting here disgusted, and feeling like this is just some insultingly obvious sexist ploy to provide men with weekly opportunities to watch scantily clad women run around and fall on each other. But, you'd be wrong. I actually think this is a great idea, and I cannot wait to watch these women compete. Frankly, I think a league like this is a bit overdue. What was the Seneca Falls convention of 1848 all about? Why did women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony fight to have the constitution amended? Why was the Department of Labor formed? Why did women in the 1960's stand in the street burning their bras?

It's all about equal rights, man. The right to vote. The right to fair wages. The right to fair working conditions. The right to attend school with the same professional goals as men. And now, finally, the right to try and make money playing tackle football. This is one of the most sought after and cherished of the male traditions. That, my friends, is progress.

So, as of right now, there are ten teams. Conspicuously absent from the league is a team to represent the city of New York. As a Giants fan, this puts me in a bit of a bind. However, although I do not care for their male counterparts in the NFL, I have decided to throw my support behind the New England Euphoria, who will play their games at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence and whose roster features a quarterback from Fall River, a safety from Danvers, and two players from Medford (one running back and one defensive back). Among other things, it's nice to see that the LFL will provide a little more hometown flavor to the fans than the NFL does (although there are players from Puerto Rico and Vietnam on the roster of the Euphoria).

Here is the website to my new nemeses, the Dallas Desire.

We'll have more information on the Lingerie Football League as it becomes available, and hopefully we'll have full coverage of Euphoria training camp. I think a trip to open practices may be in order.

If I could say one final thing to the women of the LFL, it would be this: don't listen to the critics. Many of the great leagues we know today went through rough beginnings. There were once many who felt that there was no money to be made in professional basketball. People once believed that the pro football game could never get out of the shadow of the college game. However, at the end of the day, the players of those eras laid the foundation for future greatness. You have the full support of the roomofzen, and we look forward to watching you make out with eachother.

Sorry, I mean, we look forward to following you this season.

Embrace The Weekend.

Pitt looked like shit. Louisville is sucking it up right now. Things are looking ripe for the Huskies, and I'm looking forward to seeing another banner raised in Storrs. And, on the flip side, we've got KG returning tonight in an epic matchup. I was there when we lost to these fuckers on a Sunday afternoon. I want blood tonight.

Great Herald piece here. I always knew Tony Parker was an asshole. You can also see him being dry and boring on this basketball jones interview from All-Star weekend.

And, for this embrace the weekend, I want to listen to Alone by Heart....don't judge me. KG is clearly singing it in the above picture.

Roomofzen Archives Part 2: NFL Week 1 Wrap up, 2004.

I always say that I wished we had discovered blogging in college, because that is really the ideal environment from which to blog. When you take into account the number of hours we spent watching and arguing about sports, it easily surpasses your typical 40 hour work week. A creative outlet like this would have flourished under our hands, and it probably would have helped me channel my energy more positively. However, we never knew what we were missing. Instead, the roomofzen found its early beginnings in the Bowdoin Orient, the nation's oldest continually running college newspaper. Sometimes I like to thumb through the archives to see what I thought about various matters related to sports. I like to look back on old NFL previews anyways, to reflect on how much things changed. However, it's even better to do it with yourself because you can really remember things that bugged you (for instance, apparently I felt compelled to call Jerome Bettis a "touchdown thief" in the article below).

This piece was written after week 1 of the 2004 season. According to this article, this is where we started to see flashes of promise in the Cardinals. It is also funny to read about Michael Vick and have the content be strictly limited to football.

KG DVD

Ferrante and I watched the new KG DVD last night, and it was probably the closest thing to a circle jerk that either of us have ever experienced. The DVD is incredible. Great high school footage of him dominating, interviews with family and friends, and a lot of interviews with KG that I haven't ever seen before. Nothing pisses me off more than buying something like this only to find that I've already seen everything on it. This was all new stuff. They even have his neighbor talking about how KG would throw food across the fence to the dogs so that they wouldn't bark when he was sneaking out to play basketball (his mom wouldn't let him play, because she wanted him to focus on school).

There was a lot of time spent on what great on-court chemistry he and Marbury had.....we need Marbury. You could tell that KG was cut when Stephon wanted to be traded. But, at this point, I think the two would be happy to reunite.

Warning....if you experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours, please seek immediate medical attention:

Real Men Score Empty Net Goals

So, just about all of us on the roomofzen staff attended Bowdoin College. Not surprisingly, I have received this link from Barstool Sports in my email inbox about 7 times today. Since we are all connected to this, I feel the need to comment.

I worked at the hockey games during all the years I was in college. During this time, I was always struck by the overall lack of understanding amongst the students about the general conventions of sports fandom. It's like none of them have ever attended a live sporting event in their lives. I did the color commentary for the live internet feeds (often sauced up, because the old rink was freezing) during my last two years and I remember getting in trouble several times for making negative comments about the home crowd. The usual culprit was the "safety school" chant while you were losing. This, to me, was the most embarrassing thing you could do. Your team is losing, so you start chanting about how smart you are? The proper protocol would be to shut the fuck up or to continue insulting the other team. Everyone should know this. There's no reason to bring books in to the mix.

Anyways, judging from this story, it sounds like things have gotten worse. I have been to a lot of hockey games. I had season tickets to the Whalers for about 6 years. Never in my life have I ever seen or heard fans make fun of an empty net goal. Empty net goals are badass. Not only do they pad your stats, but they put the final seal of approval on your victory over a desperate team. It's like slamming the door, putting the icing on the cake, or whatever else you might say. This stuff is not hard to understand, and yet I'm not surprised. They need to have some type of etiquette classes for the fans.

As for the part about "fairy", I've really never taken that word to mean homosexual. I've always thought of it the same way I think of "pussy". I imagine people saying "chug that beer you pussy", but using "fairy" instead if they are with girls who they don't want to scare off. But, that's just me. However, this seems unimportant. The real crime here is a blatant disregard by the student body for the ebb and flow of live sports.

Embrace the weekend......

Roomofzen Podcast Episode 9: Time Travel

Babcock joins us from another time zone. This episode is even a little more free-flowing than usual. We made the mistake of pod-casting while watching the second half of the Celtics game. On top of that, KG got injured and limped into the locker room literally 30 seconds before we pressed record. This obviously flustered us tremendously. However, we manage to go through an important progression on the sterroid issue. Who is really to blame? Should anybody be digging further into his story? Should we want to know who else is on that list, or would it be better for all of us if they just shredded it? And finally, at this point, WHO GIVES A SHIT who is in and who is not in the baseball hall of fame?

Great move for the Knicks and for Larry Hughes. Hughes can score, which helps in the short term. And, his ridiculously obnoxious contract will expire after next season, which keeps New York right on schedule.......

More Support For Horse

In recapping his trip to Phoenix for All-Star weekend, Craig Kwasniewski of the association says the following:

"Thumbs down to the crowd control for H-O-R-S-E. Look, I wanted to see it... and so did most of the fans in downtown Phoenix. There was a buzz about the return to an old-school favorite but having very limited seats in the smallish All-Star Block Party killed any chance of me seeing it (lines to get in were around the block). The NBA clearly underestimated the interest of the fans for it."

We said earlier this week that HORSE seemed like a blast, and appeared to be the kind of event that would translate well to the big arena on Saturday night. This quote offers support to my movement to replace the skills challenge with HORSE. It would be the ultimate warm up for the three point and slam dunk contests.

Unfortunately, Craig also wrote a post on February 2nd in which he dismisses the notion that Andrew Bynum's knee injury was karma biting him for what he did to Gerald Wallace, and then senselessly lashes out at Kendrick Perkins and what he calls "the front running KG-Celtics Era". To be honest, I feel like Bynum's elbow to Gerald Wallace and what Perk did to Jason Maxiell in Detroit were pretty similar. I find both to be in a different category than what David West did to Mike Miller, which was clearly not basketball.

I don't understand all the hatred for the Celtics that's out there, particularly from those who seem to want to vilify KG. How could you not love KG? It's not just because he's a Celtic....I had nothing but respect for the way he played while he was in Minnesota. The NBA is all about personality, and there is not a more passionate and exciting player in the league. This is one of the good guys. I just don't get it.

As for Perk, he does need to be more mindful of his propensity for technical fouls. But, I think there is far too little appreciation for how integral he is to the success of the Celtics. He has shut down the league's best centers, including holding Dwight Howard to ten points below his season average both times they have squared off this season. He is one of the most underrated defenders in the league, and his ability to hold down the paint allows much more range for Garnett. He has made great improvements on both ends of the floor since he began with the Celtics, and everyone associated with the team says he has an incredible work ethic. He is an enforcer. There's no question about that. But, that is essential to a team that prides itself on physical play.

Still the greatest album of all time:

The New Spring Line

A good friend of the Roomofzen, who shall remain anonymous because we use his name for many of our passwords, was visiting this weekend before he heads back to his marine base to prepare for his deployment to Afghanistan. This friend has been a loyal reader since the beginning, and has shopped many times at the roomofzen store. It seems only fitting that we create a special line for him to wear while he's in the field. So, it is with great pleasure that I unveil the Smokey Line of t-shirts.

The specifications were clear: the shirts needed to be a specific olive green color, and the logo needed to be over the abdomen so that it would be covered at most times. Because we know that this design is not ideal for all customers, each shirt has two versions.

We have the authentic field version (logo on abdomen, easy to cover):

And then we have the replica editions (logo on chest):

you get the idea.....

These shirts are American Apparel, so they cost a little more but they are extremely durable and were not made in a sweatshop.

Roomofzen Podcast Episode #8: Stay Classy Tampa Bay

On today's snowed in Super Bowl week edition, Babcock and I breakdown the matchups between the Steelers and Cardinals, review some of the prop bets available for Sunday's showdown, offer some creative marketing ideas for the 43 strip clubs (as reported by the AP) within the Tampa city limits, and make our bold predictions as to which team will hoist the Lombardi Trophy (and, unlike our last episode, we actually disagree).

We also concede that Kurt Warner is more than just a figure for us to mock, remember some of Babcock's harder years, make our predictions as to how the Eastern Conference will shake out in the NBA, and ponder the identity of the Phoenix Suns.

Please enjoy....

Week 14 Picks

We recorded a podcast with our picks for this week. However, we sound like slow-talking robots. We're going to try and get this fixed by next week. Rather than go without picks, I thought I'd post our picks for this week so that we can have an accurate tally on the roomofzen picks for the entire season.

Before we start:

"Like everyone else, I'm still disappointed that a receiver didn't honor Plaxico Burress last weekend by catching a touchdown, then pretending to shoot himself in the leg with the football and limping around. This never would have not happened if Chad Johnson was still alive."
--Bill Simmons, in his week 14 picks column. Quotes like these are why he makes the big bucks.

We were 13-3 last week

Bears (-6) over Jaguars: I like the Bears to cover here.

Minnesota (-7.5) over Detroit: When we podcasted, I took a leap of faith on Detroit. But, with Pat and Kevin Williams now set to play, I have to take the Vikings to cruise in this one.

Houston (+7.5) over Green Bay: The Texans seem to be hitting their stride. I can't stress enough each week how much I love what Aaron Rodgers and his crew of receivers are doing. But, that Green Bay defense is shotty. 7.5 is too much for Green Bay to be giving.

Tennessee (-10) over Cleveland: I just imagine Romeo Crennel sitting in his office all day watching funny youtube videos and playing computer solatiaire to make the time before he is fired go more quickly. This strategy will not translate well on the field. Shaun Rogers and that defensive line may slow the Titans running game, but I expect Kerry Collins to outdeul Ken Dorsey.

Indy (-13) over the Bengals: 13 is a lot, especially against a Bengals team that seems to keep their losses closely (last weeks game notwithstanding). But, Indy looked as bad as I've ever seen last week. They will come out with a sense of urgency today to prove their worth.

Atlanta (+1) over New Orleans: Even with Will Smith, this Saints defense is too thin to stop this surprising Falcons offense.

Giants (-7.5) over Philadelphia: Assuming nobody else shoots themself in the leg by accident, I like the G-Men to roll and clinch the division here.

Miami (-1) over Buffalo: Miami needs to keep their head above water.

Denver (-7.5) over KC: We have seen two different Denver teams this season. The bad one should win this game by ten.

Jets (-4) over San Francisco: The Jets got smacked back in to reality last week. This is a tough test on the West Coast, but if they are for real then they need to win.

Patriots (-7) over Seattle: "Seattle really sucks" has been one of the more overlooked storylines of this season.

Arizona (-14) over St. Louis: ...........14 points is a lot.......14 points is a lot........but, the Cards are at home and they should get back on track. I think they cover.

Pittsburgh (-3.5) over Dallas: When we originally podcasted, I took Dallas. But, with Marion Barber out, Pittsburgh's defense should have their way with Tony Romo. With DeMarcus Ware out, the Cowboys won't be able to take advantage of the Steelers' shitty offensive line.

Baltimore (-5.5) over Washington: Stop Clinton Portis, stop the Redskins.

Carolina (even) over Tampa Bay: Carolina is undefeated at home and DeAngelo Williams is a machine.

Roomofzen Podcast Episode #5: Week 12 Picks

Babcock and I briefly touch on Kevin Garnett's suspension, and then delve into what we expect in Week 12. If we had a gun to our head and we had to hire Marvin Lewis or Andy Reid as our head coach, who would we pick? Are either of us taking the Lions to pick up their first win? The Titans to pick up their first loss? Who is living the better life right now, Kurt Warner or Matt Leinart? Has Matt Leinart slept with Kurt Warner's wife? We have all your answers here. Enjoy.....

Roomofzen Podcast Episode #4: The Dynamite is Defective. We'll Have to go Around.

In Episode 4, Ted and I wax poetic about the greatness of the NFC East and do our best to insult just about every other division in the process. But, if you can get past that, we do offer some thoughts on both the Ravens and Giants and we offer an in-depth analysis of the upcoming matchup between the Redskins and Cowboys (which is without a doubt the biggest game of the week). Who needs these games more, and what impact will they have on the division going forward? Is this a must-win for Dallas? You'll just have to listen.

Note: We tried to squeeze some NBA talk at the beginning (Celts coming off a huge win, and Ted's Wizards coming off their first win), but by the time we were done this was another 2 hour job. So, I chopped off the NBA, and this is now well under an hour just like we like it. So, if you're surprised to hear Ted starting things off instead of my graceful "uhhh, ok, this is.....the roomofzen podcast.....episode 4", it's because I edited out the first hour or so.
