The Red Sox could have had Willie Mays in his prime playing Center Field, and I still would have been willing to trade him to bring in Johan Santana. We advocated strongly on here for this trade to happen and nothing came of it. In fact, it really appears to me now that the negotiations, more than anything, were a way to help prevent the Yankees from getting Johan without giving too much up.
Well, now we find ourselves in quite a situation. It sounds like if Curt Schilling is able to pitch, he probably won't be very effective. Look, the Red Sox can't use the timing of this shoulder problem as an exscuse for passing on Santana. I have no problem with re-signing Schilling, but I do have a problem with trying to tell me that until last week we were all planning on him being completely healthy and effective all season long. Even if he entered the season healthy, he's a virtual guarantee to miss a month with injury somewhere along the way, not to mention the fact that this is probably going to be his last year no matter what.
Johan would have made this shoulder issue a moot point as we head into the season. Schilling would still be a contributer, but we really would only look to lean on him in the playoffs. The idea that we passed on Johan because we were counting on Schilling being healthy is ludicrous. With Johan, we would have been the runaway favorite to win the American League. Can you really say that we're definately better than the Tigers now? I'm not so sure. This trade should have been made regardless of how healthy Curt Schilling was.
